Enter the Oasys

🏝️ The preferred chain of AAA game developers

To get to a future where web3 gaming is just simply gaming, ownership needs to be established within the same experiences we have in traditional gaming. As the web3 native studios continue building toward the experience, traditional studios have started building toward ownership.

The latest to move from traditional to web3 came from Ubisoft with the announcement of their upcoming RPG Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. We’ve previously seen additional announcements from other major studios like Nexon, Square Enix, and Sega.

When looking at the currently active and announced web3 games, Polygon, BNB, Ethereum, and Solana have long maintained dominance in the number of titles. About 40% of all web3 games are on these four blockchains.

It’s not just web3 games that have favored these chains. Web2 companies adopting blockchain technology have continuously built on Ethereum, Solana, and Polygon particularly. When it comes to attracting traditional game developers, however, none of these blockchains compare to Oasys.

Oasys has continuously made headlines for onboarding AAA game developers, including Ubisoft, Sega, and Bandai Namco. In a Cointelegraph article highlighting how Asia-based gaming companies are leading blockchain adoption, Playstudios and GameStop are the only two major gaming companies mentioned that aren’t involved with Oasys—and Oasys isn’t even mentioned.

Though the adoption of Oasys has largely been by Asia-based companies, two-thirds of the largest gaming companies are in China, Japan, and South Korea. With the recent announcement from Ubisoft, it’s clear that Oasys is becoming the leader in onboarding web3 gaming and gamers. Because of that, we think it’s something we should be talking about.

Overview

Oasys is an EVM-compatible, proof-of-stake (PoS) layer 1 blockchain built for web3 gaming. By making an EVM-compatible blockchain independent of Ethereum, Oasys can create an environment immediately available to existing EVM games without the scalability issues of Ethereum.

The project was established in early 2022 by traditional and web3 gaming industry leaders Gabby Dizon (co-founder, YGG), Hajime Nakatani (CEO, Bandai Namco Research), Hironao Kunimitsu (co-founder, Thirdverse), Hironobu Ueno (founder, Double Jump Crypto), and Shuji Utsumi (co-COO, Sega).

Oasys raised $20 million in July 2022 in a private token sale of its native OAS token. The round was led by Republic Capital and participated in by Jump Crypto, Crypto.com, Huobi, Fenbushi Capital, Quantstamp, and others. Four months later, the team raised an additional $1 million through an IDO at $0.05755/OAS.

Oasys Investors

In December 2022, Oasys held its mainnet launch with an initial 21 strategic validators. Since then, the network has launched over 20 active games and announced the development of at least another 30 by web3 native and AAA game developers.

Architecture

Oasys is a polylithic blockchain that utilizes a two-layer architecture consisting of a Hub layer and Verse layer. The structure is most similar to other polythetic blockchains like Cosmos, Avalanche, and Polkadot, where a single network is split into multiple parts with subnetworks that are dependent on the single network.

The Hub-Layer provides consensus to the network and maintains interoperability among Verses and other EVM-compatible blockchains through its fungible Token/Non-Fungible Token (FT/NFT) Bridge. Since transactions are distributed across the different Verses, the Hub Layer remains dedicated to providing high data availability among ecosystems.

The Verse Layer is what sets Oasys apart from other L1 blockchains. Verses are high throughput, optimistic layer 2 blockchains. Verses are highly customizable for developers, creating a unique experience where rules within each sub-ecosystem can be set at a global level. Developers looking to develop unique NFT features, protect IP, or reward users for playing in different areas of the Verse can be easily configured by the developers. In a way, you can think of Verses as project-run private chains connected to the public Hub Layer.

In addition to creating uniquely customizable sub-ecosystems, the Verse-Layer design is geared toward low-cost, high-speed transactions. One of the core differences between existing optimistic solutions and Verses is that Oasys connects multiple verses through multiple optimistic rollups. By connecting multiple machines to a single Verse, Oasys can reach up to 1500 tps.

Verses

Though still fairly new, the Oasys ecosystem has already accumulated 20 active titles across 6 Verses, with another 30+ games in development.

MCH Verse

The MCH Verse was developed by the team behind My Crypto Heroes. Though they initially launched on Ethereum in 2018, the MCH team is expanding its suite of games and MCHC, RAYS, and GUM tokens on Oasys.

As the Oasys ecosystem and respective Verses continue to grow, we expect more traditional game developers to start experimenting with Oasys. The customizability of the Verse-Layer, Hub-Layer optimization for gaming, and EVM-compatibility make Oasys a strong leader in making web3 gaming just gaming.

Initiatives like the HACKJAM are supporting the development of core infrastructure like native DEXs, bridging, and tooling, while also furthering Verse growth. Combined with major upcoming releases from Ubisoft, Sega (with Double Jump Crypto), and Com2uS/XPLA, we are excited to see what’s to come on Oasys.
